Driver Fatigue Management

Driving a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) requires focus and responsibility. Fatigue and drowsiness can impair a driver's ability to operate a CMV safely. Here are some safe driving tips for truck drivers:

Get enough sleep - experts suggest approximately 8 hours of sleep each night to maintain alertness during work. Lack of sleep can lead to fatigue and impaired reaction time.

Recognize signs of fatigue - common signs include constant yawning, delayed reactions, difficulty remembering the last few miles, feeling restless or irritable.

Avoid over-the-counter medications - simple allergy and cold medicines can cause drowsiness and impair alertness.

Beware of micro sleeps - sudden temporary episodes of sleep or drowsiness that may last a few seconds. If a driver feels drowsy, they should stop and rest immediately.

Address sleep apnea and other sleep disorders - up to 28% of commercial driver's license (CDL) holders have sleep apnea, which can impair a driver's ability to operate a CMV safely. Maintaining healthy eating habits with proper exercise.
